IHE Professional Certificate
The IHE Professional Certificate in Traffic Sign Design, endorsed by DfT, HA and the CSS Traffic Engineering was formally launhced in September 2007.
The Certificate is open to all - there are no academic entry requirements - you don't need to be an IHE member - it's for the generalist traffic engineer with signs as one of many responsibiities as well as for consultant's sign specialists.
Candidate submit a report of their experience and a portfolio of supporting documents demonstrating competence in:
- Statutory requirements, policy & general guidance
- Use of Traffic Signs
- Design of Traffic Signs
and a choice from:
- Road Markings & Road Studs
- Temporary Traffic Management Signing
- Sign Design Software
- Construction & Specification
- Implementation
The award is at 3 levels: Foundation, Practitioner and Expert.

TSD4: Annex 1 describes the competence standards and assessment methodology.
TSD4: Annex 2 describes how to submit for the Professional Certificate and the EngTech or IEng Professional Review simultaneously using one combined portfolio.

The IHE Steering Committee includes representatives from DfT, HA, Welsh Assembly, Buchanan, Atkins, Jacobs, Project Centre, Mott MacDonald and Essex CC.
If you would like to be an Assessor, download the Assessor Application Form. You should normally be an Incorporated Engineer, Chartered Engineeer or equivalent.

One day courses on sign design are available from:
Manufacturing of Signs is covered by a Sector Scheme and operatives normally gain an NVQ2 or 3 in signmaking which can include a unit on using sign design software.
